Large numbers of enemy characters programmed to behave in an easily predictable manner are typically featured. These enemies may behave in a certain way dependent on their type, or attack in formations that the player can learn to predict. The basic gameplay tends to be straightforward with many varieties of weapons. Characters can instantly change direction with no inertia, and projectiles move in a straight line at constant speeds. The player's character can collect "power-ups" which may afford the character greater protection, an "extra life", health, shield, or upgraded weaponry.

Cave's insect-themed, fantasy shooter casts you as a princess who battles giant creepy crawlies across five vertically scrolling stages. Cave is a shmup developer that has many hits in its catalog, with Deathsmiles being one of the company's finest. Deathsmiles is a supernatural shooter in which you play as one of five gothic lolitas who defend their land from a demon invasion using familiars and intense, enemy-wrecking magic. In it, you play as a magical princess tasked with defeating an army of bugs using three weapons and two option types across five vertically scrolling stages with animated backgrounds. And while you no longer have to cough up coins to play your favorite title, shmup games are keeping the spirit alive with arcade-inspired gameplay and presentation. Shoot ’em up games, or shmups, are an indie game staple of the arcade era that have managed to find a new life on PC and home consoles, primarily the Nintendo Switch. Like a platform game, shoot 'em ups have become popular with amateur game developers for their relative ease of development.

My database initially had about 20 fields used to indicate different mechanics such as chaining, movement types etc. Once a new mechanic was discovered, a new field needed to be added to the database, causing a need to go back through most of the games that I had already played to make sure I hadn't missed it in the analysis. Enemy projectiles move towards the player at an astonishing rate. This is made harder by the fact that the Zero Hour controls are sluggish at best. These levels were called screens and increased in difficulty as the player progressed through the game.

But I have so many non-Tate games on my backlog that I can't justify it. However, if they decide to finally release Radiant Silvergun for Switch, I will finally buy a Flip Grip and every game on this list. Especially just the horizontal-scrolling games that it doesn't work with.

And there's also Black Paradox, a simple but enjoyable shmup with upgrades, great pixel visuals and great music too. Steredenn is in my top five games on the Switch, and R-Type is a game I buy on every platform. I'm a little surprised to find I have 11 of the games on this list, and I'm buying Raiden IV Mikado and Cotton Reboot very soon. Only one of these games, that I have on the Nintendo Switch, is Raiden V, which I really enjoyed played. I should definitely, look into checking a couple more of these game out, see if anything else catches my interest. I wish we have more of these coming to the Switch as I am currently collecting classic shmups.
